Pipe smoke: Getting rid of wasps, bees from your coop

Hi Everyone. Have had chickens for two years now here in Burgundy France - love my five Light Sussex laying hens and just put up with their rooster (he protects them, so they bravely endure his constant buggering). Just bought six new chicks which are now old enough to go from their brooder to the coop. In preparing their adjoining “condominium” today, I was stung by a wasp. Owch! Upon further inspection, I discovered five wasp nests in their pen rafters, as well as at the peak of their coop. I dressed in long sleeved clothing, neck/head tube scarf, hat and gloves, lit my (tobacco) pipe and went to work. They hate being around smoke, so I made sure to blow it in their direction, making them all leave so that I could grab and fling away the nests into the field next door. I’m only a (very) occasional pipe smoker, so also waved the pipe around as well to spread the smoke. Anyone ever try this method to handle bees/wasps? It worked, without any poisonous insects sprays involved!

Some wasp species seem to be territorial. I've seen ads for fake wasp nests to put up :) Some people have used paper or plastic bags to simulate nests! If they come back, maybe get them to leave but leave the nest intact to see if that keeps the next group from setting up shop. Next time I'll spray 'em and leave the nest to see if this helps.
Good luck all!
