This is my first time hatching. I ended up with only ONE fertile egg (out of 20).

It is day 21. I wasn't really expecting this egg to hatch, but 3 hours ago I heard a chirp. I have the egg in a cut down carton.
Sometime in the last 3 hours, the chick pipped at the wrong end. I really didn't think it would be able to get out, because it was upside-down in the carton. So, I ignored all previous advice, and quickly slipped my hand in and set the egg on the wire floor.
I thought maybe the chick had drowned, as there was no sound or movement, but then I heard a little chirp. My inclination is to just leave it alone, as it only pipped a few hours ago. Does someone with experience know if chicks that pip on the wrong end usually make it out anyway (if they are not in a carton)?
If the chick were in trouble, how would I know? Just wondering if there is anything else I should do!

Hi, I have personally not had this happen out of the 35 chicks or so I have hatched but have read a couple of forums where this has happened and the chick makes it out just fine on it's own. Your feeling are right just leave it be. It won't do much for the first few hours after pipping then it will suddenly know what is doing and rotate round the egg and breaking the shell to get out. If after 24 hours it still hasn't done anything at all it may be struggling a bit. You will know because it will start to cheep more and louder and when they start to struggle the cheep will sound weaker and less frequent but for now I would worry at all. Enjoy your little one hatching it is an absolute joy to watch hence o have hatched so many! Which has really got to stop now, I will pack upy incy till next year! Anyway good luck amd let is know how it goes

Thanks so much for your quick response! I'll leave the egg alone overnight (although I can't imagine I'll be sleeping well!

) I was so excited to hear it chirp, after what seemed like a long silence.

I plan to try another hatch with a new incubator that arrived today (this one is borrowed). Next time I will have shipped eggs going in with my own, which for some reason are not so fertile.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this lone chick!

My eggs started hatching yesterday afternoon(they are in egg cartons also) and this morning when I looked at them there were 2 that started to pip on the small end. I laid them on their side and posted basically the same as you. I
got a lot of the same replies as you did. One has hatched and I'm still waiting on the other. Hopefully by morning it will have hatched. Good luck with yours.

Thanks. Glad to hear that one of yours hatched! That gives me hope.

I'm picking up just a few chicks at a feed store on Friday, so the lone chick will have friends, if it makes it. It would be exciting to have one I hatched myself.

Just wondering if your second chick made it, 2 britts.

Mine was chirping on and off throughout the night, but didn't seem to make any progress. I think the pip hole is a tiny bit bigger, - a tiny piece of shell fell off, but the membrane is left sticking out. Now the chick is quiet mostly, but still alive. I can't figure out if this means it is resting, or if it needs help. I really hate just waiting, but at the same time I am afraid to mess with it.

It has now been 14 hours since I found the pip. How long does it normally take to hatch?
