My husband and I have been gardening on different scales since we first married 14 yrs ago. We are a military family with 6 yrs left and several more moves. Our goal is to retire to the Omaha, NE area. We will still need to find a good school district with lots of options for kids activities. As important to us is being able to expand our gardening and adding a backyard flock. We are currently thinking the Elkhorn area but are open to any info people can give us about anything pertaining to local laws on raising chickens, local schools and local real estate. We are planners and 6 yrs will come fast and with any luck we will get stationed to NE sooner.

Hello and welcome to BYC

The only thing I can think of that will help answer some of your questions is this section on chicken laws and ordinances:

https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/37/local-chicken-laws-ordinances-and-how-to-change-them

What you can also do is look in the Where am I? Where are you! section and pick a state you are interested in and ask the members there.

Thank you for the warm welcome! I spent yesterday trying to get through as much of this site as I could, it is amazing and has so much great information. I am going to recommend this site to a friend of mine in Alabama with chickens! It is great to see honest feedback to each other pro and con, and how experience has been the mother of all teachers. We really started thinking about our own chickens after noticing the huge difference between commercial eggs at our commissary and the backyard flock eggs from our neighbors in Germany.
Many thanks again for the pointers!
