I've been reading and watching online videos for the past week, in preparation for starting my first flock. Everytime I google a question, it seems like 90% of the time, my search turns up answers in your forum. I guess I should just be searching your forum first...

I was originally interested in getting a couple of chickens, but the more I read about quail the more I'm convinced they are my fowl of choice. I haven't decided for sure what kind of quail to get, as I figured I might be limited to what I can find locally...I know I don't want button quail, and I'd prefer the largest varieties, but I feel a variety that can be sexed from a frontal inspection would probably be the best to start out with. I've been planning my first hutch and collecting materials; hope to start building this coming weekend.

My city requires me to put the coop at least 50ft from a neighbor's house. Since I live on .3 acres, this greatly limits my choice of location.

The one question I haven't yet found an answer to, is if I put the quail coop facing my driveway, and someone walks up it, will they get noisy in response? If so, that would be a security bonus feature for me, and would resolve my choice of location.

Although I live in Fort Worth TX USA now, I am originally from western NY. I'm an accountant. I have a 90lb blonde English Mastiff puppy named Starbuck and a small tuxedo cat named Destruct-a-Kitty. (The cat is 100% indoor, so no threat to a future flock unless I get chicks and bring them inside)

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. My wife and I were both raised in Texas not too far from where you live (Blue Ridge for her, Greenville for me), and I have relatives even closer to your (in Weatherford, TX). Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your quail.

I've never had quail (only chickens) but they sure are pretty birds. Try the quail forum @Kelsie2290 has given you and the members there should be able to help you out.

Good luck with your birds! Nice to have you join us.
