Plastic Bandettes to ID birds!

How the heck do you get them back off when they start getting too tight as they grow? I'm worried about a bird squirming just as I'm trying to cut the zip-tie, and jabbing or cutting a bird. Wouldn't be a good thing, Me Thinks...

Sundown & Hinkjc - are the bands easy to get back off when you need to go up to the next size? or do they have to be cut off as well?

The bandettes are very easy to remove and they can't get to tight as the bird grows. They wrap around the leg. Cutler Supply is the best place to order them from. You can order them numbered 1-25 or higher and in different sizes and colors to fit you needs. I use 9s on my Ameraucanas and Welsummers and 11s on my Wyandottes.

Right now I'm only zip tying my geese who have giant feet so the bands can start out loose. When it looks like they're getting tight all you have to do is take scissors, slide them underneath alongside the leg and snip. If there is any thrashing the scissors are already braced along the leg and don't move.

I think im going to go with the Adjustable Numbered Aluminium Bands that Strombergs has. I can get 100 for $9.95 w/shipping. The adjust from sizes 9-13. And I can put one on each foot incase one pops off.

I bought a few Wyandotte pullets once that had leg bands on, the spiral ones. I don't know the brand name. So I don't know if these are the same ones you are talking about.

Anyway, I forgot about them until one evening I noticed they were getting really tight. My DH helped me get them off the birds that night, 2 of them had become embedded the legs, thankfully not too badly for us to remove. The flesh was raw underneath. I slathered bag balm on the injured legs, and they healed fine.

I wouldn't assume those bands will be ok as the birds grow, keep an eye on them, just in case!
