Has anyone planted things directly in the area of the chickens run? I was thinking of maybe doing this so they can feast on quality veggies and what not.

i KNOW MINE WOULD EAT UP ANY TRANSPLANTS OR SEEDLINGS BEFORE THEY HAD A CHANCE TO GROW.
i'M PLANTING A SEPARATE GREENS GARDEN INSTEAD.
OOPS, SORRY ABOUT ALL CAPITALS! NO TIME TO RE-TYPE.

Use tomato cages and wire coverings. If you can keep them from digging up the roots they will keep growing.

Oh that sounds like a great idea. Thanks wolftracks!

You're welcome.

I didn't use them the first time, so passing on what I had to learn

I have and I will never do it again.

I planted a sunflower and might I say it never had a chance. Once it sprouted, it was gone. Personally I'd put maybe some chicken wire around to avoid pecking although it might not be as....sightly as you'd like it but at least it will let it grow.
