Will this work or do I need to go buy something more chicken specific? My 8 week old girls ate this up (less than 1/4 cup of it between the three of them).

Play sand is too regular, all the same sized bits of sand.

Construction sand has various sized sand and little bitty pebbles in it, of different shapes, so it's better for "grinding" up the food in the crop.

A fifty-pound bag of it from any home improvement center should be under 5 bucks. You can keep some for grit purposes, and put the rest in the run or even in a kitty litter pan for the chickens to use for dust bathing.

Okay. This makes sense. Thanks for the hints. We'll get some soon.
