I have a 1 yr old buff orpington who lays x-large eggs. the other day I though she was broody as she wouldn't get off the nest but no egg laying in a few days. Today she stayed in the coop on the perch when I went to go check her tonight her bottom is very soiled and foul smelling. I took her inside to wash her and thought I cleaned a few little pieces of egg shell from the back end. I massaged her crop as it feels full and after putting her outside she had a very small clear watery stool with just a drop of regular stool and so I proceeded to watch her and she is trying to push out a thick pasty ? stool. Her comb is still red and up but her eyes are starting to look sick. She free ranges and did eat a few bugs tonight while out until she went back to the coop.
Now I am not good with chicken anatomy and am only assuming this is her rectum it is dilated and moist red around it.

Soiled bottom is a classic sign of lice. Check in front of her cloaca on her abdomen for a rash or bugs. If very soiled there may even be egg sacs on base of the feathers. Clip the feathers in the area to allow drying. Spray her belly and vent with permrethrins. Any time u wash their bumm they will flex their cloaca.

Please help I don;t see any bugs on her she just had a stool that was almost like a semi-cooked egg with a long strand of dark colored worm looking (not a worm) in it

Hi. Poor bird

Can you possibly post pics of what she passed - folks will be better able to help you this way.
So were there maggots, or did you conclude they weren't?

definitely maggots after the bath they were in the tub. I just searched her whole body and no bugs or anything else found drained the bath and refilled and no more maggots

The foul smell makes me think infection. If there's no external injury that drew the maggots (double check that), an egg may have broken inside and caused an infection. Since you thought you saw eggshell, it points to this as the likely culprit. This is extremely serious and antibiotic is needed pronto. If you can get a pic posted folks may be able to tell if the material you described appears to be part of an egg. I'd be inclined to call this a broken egg. Others will hopefully be along with experience on which antibiotic med proven best for this scenario. The trouble of course is that it's a Sunday night but hopefully she'll hang on tonight so you can get her on meds by early tomorrow. If this is the problem, she may well die without prompt medication.

She seems perkier since her bath and ate some yogurt for me. I have her in a box in my bathroom so hopefully she makes it . I just lost one of my silkies tonight to a wild animal I'm thinking I don't want to lose another one. Her vent looks better after the bath too

jjthink, thanks for posting. I was first thinking egg bound, but then the OP said pieces of shell were seen in the bath. Then, I thought prolapse, and was about to post some links on that, when the OP said maggots. That is so serious, especially if they are internal.

To the OP, I don't have experience with this, but am giving you a bump in hopes of a more knowledgable member seeing this. I hope someone can give you advice on the right meds. Meanwhile, you can search for other threads on maggots and prolapse. This might give you an idea of what to do.

Good luck to you and your hen.

thanks for the bump today she was free ranging for a short period but slow to run. I kept her in a box last night inside and she had several regular black and white poops. Still sleepy but comb still red and upright not droopy. Not sure where the maggots were they just showed up in the water after a short period of time in the bath
