Hey everyone. So I just started my duck journey back in February. I was very unsure if I could get any to hatch at all with my cheaper incubator I had bought on a whim for turkey eggs I saved from a raccoon but obviously the incubator didn’t come until weeks later. So anyhow! When I was given some Rouen duck eggs I said I’ll give it a try. When half my eggs (3 out of 6) started pipping around March 11th I was thrilled! Now they are here! But one that I’ve named Puddles is not doing well. It was the first to hatch and hatched completely on its own. I was unsure of myself but I thought the little one kicked itself out of the egg too soon. Whereas the other two took their time. And I even had to help the big boy out of his egg (I’m just calling him a boy idk) . Back to Puddles. It had a thing on its butt . It didn’t look like the researched egg yolk sac to me. But now it has ā€œhealedā€ a little. But this duckling looks very weak and I just don’t know what to do. In the first picture you can’t even see the poor thing it’s curled up in the corner 😭 Puddles is going to die ain’t it?

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

I would start giving Puddles some poultry nutri-drench or rooster booster supplement three times a day and see if that doesn't help. We have duck experts here that will be along soon with better advice. I hope Puddles pulls through and begins to thrive.

It died seconds after I posted this.

Sad to say but normally when something like this is wrong they do often pass. Sometimes there are other internal problems we can't see.

But from experience it could have been the yolk sac dried before being absorbed

in this situation you could keep it moist with coconut oil, not water. The chicken may complete the absorption.

In other experiences I have had them dry up and fall off. It's a hard call to make and say for sure from the picutre which would have/ could have helped.
