I am new to this chicken thing so I really need your help. I have 13- 12 week old chicks ( 2 older silkies that are in with my layers). A few of them have formed stools with what appears to be blood in them. A few have very mucus stools. Do I have either Coccidia or Giardia??? If so, what do I give them and how much and for how long. Do I repeat the dose in a couple of weeks??? Please help. I need to go to tractor supply or the feed store ASAP to hlep my girls.
I am trying to do everything organically, using DE in food and in bedding. If I have to use a medication I will since they are not laying yet.

Thanks so much,
Joanne

What type of DE are you using? Where did you get it? I am searching for the meds for you now and will post it here unless someone else beats me to it

If it's cocci-Sulmet will work(not sure of the dosage), but Corid is easier on their systems. Dosing on Corid is 1 tsp. per 1 gallon of water for 5 days(change water and add Corid every day).
If you treat with Sulmet, be sure to give them some yogurt to soothe the upset to their digestive systems.
Good luck!

I am using food grade. Do you think I could have put too much in their food. Someone told me to put 1 cup to 25lbs of feed. I only had a little left in my can so I just sprinkled some in with that and mixed. Maybe I over did it??? Thanks for checking those med for me.

Autumn, I just checked the link out on the normal and abnormal poos. Thank you so much, what a help that was. I think mine are still in the normal range. Thanks again, you guys are great for newbies.

If your chicks are on the ground and not on a medicated chick feed (amprollium) I would still treat them for cocci. It progresses pretty fast.

Sulmet is fast and easy to use.
