I have a chick that began hatching more than 24 hours ago and it had pipped but when I found it the mom was off the nest because she moved the rest of her babies. I had another broody hen so as soon as I found it I moved it under that hen, but the pip didn't get bigger for awhile. Now it's finally getting a tiny bit bigger but I'm wondering if I should help it hatch? I can see it's beak and stuff and I have a picture

I'm worried it's been in there too long because it's been more than a day. How long does it typically take them to hatch?

Thank you for any help

Ok well I hatched it myself and it went well and he's back under mommy drying off.

there is nothing wrong with helping a chick hatch. I have had to do it quite a few times. Usually it was because the inner membrane became totally dried. and the little ins were chirping in distress! ......all these chicks were hatched under my top hen. So just be careful, use warmed filtered water to keep the membrane wet and make sure any instruments are sanitized.

What we ended up doing was using clean tweezers and chipped away at the shell then left him to see if he could push through the membranes. But he was pretty stuck in there! We think he was maybe positioned wrong? We were reading about it, but I don't know. But the membrane was really dry and completley dried up so we wet it a little with a damp paper towel and eventually he popped out! And he's a little baby silkie! So cute!
