She was great Saturday. Yesterday afternoon I noticed she was just standing in the coop when my other two came out to get snacks. Today i found her laying unresponsive with a swollen face. I can't see any injuries. Her crop doesn't seem full. I haven't stuck my finger in her butt to look for an egg. But she really hasn't made any signs of laying yet at all. My husband banished us the the basement because he's afraid of bird flu.
I tried to get her to drink water. Should i force her some with a syringe? What can be wrong with her? Other chickens seem fine.

im sorry this is happening. look up some of the signs or bird flu. also it can help to look up her symptoms if you havent already until someone more experienced gets here. is it possible she was pecked in her eye with the drainage around it?

Thank you! Yes. Perhaps. I thought they were both swollen shut, but her other one opens fine and when i tried to clean up/examine the crusty eye , she protested a tiny bit. And it wont open. Shes newish to the flock.....had her only a couple of months. My rhode island red is a little bit of a jerk to her. Will do some more online searching. I also may syringe her some water (down the side of her throat) if i can't get her to drink because I'm sure she never left the coop to drink today.

Poor thing. She looks cyanotic or blue like she is dying. Or is it bruising? Does the other side of her face look that same color. She may have mycoplasma or coryza, both bacterial respiratory diseases, but without testing or a necropsy by your state poultry lab, hard to know for sure. How long has she been sick? Has she taken any fluids by mouth? Keep her warm. Constact your state vet if she dies. So sorry.

Thank you. She seems a little more awake. I was able to give her some droppersful of water. I wiped her crusty eye and her whole face gently with a warm damp rag a couple of hours ago and that may have caused bruising. It's darker colored on her face now with green esp around the bad eye. I don't hear any coughs or rattles or wheezes. She is in a cozy box covered by a thick quilt with an open end for air near her face.

I have hope that she will be better in the morning. Maybe she's just putting on a front so that we can both sleep.

Terramycin eye ointment from feed stores is good to put into the eye after cleaning the eye of drainage or gunk. Warm compresses can help soften crusts in eyes. I have even used plain neosporin ointment in a pinch, but sterile eye ointment is preferred. If no ointment is available you can use saline or saline eye drops.

just a heads up dont put water directly into her beak just put one drop at a time on her beak in front of her nose so it rolls down into her beak, I drowned a chick NOT doing this, better safe than sorry!! also when my chickens had crusty eyes from being pecked we got some salty water on a cotton bud and gently cleaned it out and there eye was fine the next day. good luck! :fl
