Hello,

I am very new to this forum...and new to raising chickens as well. My family and I have 5 hens that are about 7 months old. They have all been very healthy... until two days ago we noticed our little RI red Maggie limping a little. We checked her leg and there was no evidence of swelling or a cut/sore anywhere... over the last two days it has progressed to the point that she can no longer stand up and has become very lifeless. We have moved her away from the rest of the girls, and have been giving her water from an eye dropper as she will not eat or drink on her own. At first we thought maybe she had an impacted crop because she has been eating a lot of fresh grass... but we inspected her crop and it all seems fine. Her eyes are clear, she is not sneezing... but she does seem to be in some respiratory distress. He comb looks fine, we cannot find any welling or sores anywhere... But she defiantly cannot stand up... and she seems to be fighting for her life. I would appreciate any advice you can give. It is memorial day and we live in a small town in Montana with no vet that will take chickens... their advice is to cull a sick bird!!! Thanks for all your help! I can post a picture of her if that would help!
