My 3 yr old son did not realize hens are not the same as ducks. Our friendliest hen who loves to be cuddled let my son pick her up and thinking she would enjoy the swim...he dropped her into our pool. By the time my older son who is only 5 realized she was having a hard go at it, he came in to get mebut I think it was too late. I lifted her out of the pool and water was pouring out her little beak. She was so disoriented she could not walk straight and layed on the ground on her side. I tipped her over ansd water poured out but when i held her to try to dry her off and calm her down i could literally feel the gurgling and bubbles in her lungs.
I dried her off but no other water has come ourt of her and she has continued gurgling to a point hat when she tries to 'bock' or "cluck" she is sounding liek she is gurgling as well. It has been 48 hourrs. She came out of the coop and layed herself in the shade near the drinking water. She drinks every now and then but hasn't even moved to eat or anything. We put some food in front of her and she ate it but was laying down while she ate it. The other hens and rooster are leaving her alone, and she all day just layed there looking pitiful as ever. I have been cryiong on and off for 48 hrs. When we went out to look them in the coop (we have 15 hens and a rooster) she has maanged to actually get herself up into the coop and was laying down. DH asked if we should maybe slaughter her to put her out of her misery?? Is thereanything we can do?? is there medicine we could give her?? if she has pneamonia which i am almost certain she does, will she give it to the others?? Mt\y sons are so upset as well. They thought they were playing w her and she would enjoy the dip in the pool with them.
what do we do??
