Somehow my RIR got a cut on her leg and it is swollen and warm to the touch. She won't put it down. She does wrap her toes around my finger so hopefully that means it is not broken anywhere. She is approx 7 weeks old. How do I treat this?

Maybe you could put peroxide on it to help prevent infection. Put her separate from the other chickens for a while until healed. Is it bent? If so make a splint out of 2 popsicle sticks. Maybe if you have a vet near you have her checked out.

Hope this helped!

First let me tell ya one thing I have learned is Chicks and Chickens are A LOT Tougher than you might ever think :) They tend to get bump, bruises, scrapes an heal just fine. So here is what I would and have done when Ive had things happen like you described.

When you look at her leg and feel it you should be able to tell if its a break. ( from what you said it doesnt sound like a break).
If you can remove her from the rest of your flock that would be best if possible.
If you have some Betadine solution or other antiseptic I would clean the area with a diluted soultion
After you clean it look to see if theres anything in the cut. If there is try and rinse it out. ( A clean squirt bottle is awesome for doing this. If you dont have a syringe)

Now I use Blue Cote to spray on minor wounds. Its medicine and it taste bad so your hen and her friends wont peck at it:)

Let her rest in a seperate area for a day or two and see if she doesnt bounce back:)

Good LUck!
