A couple days ago my 2-year-old hen Blue Bell passed away, a week before her neck was suddenly twisted and she couldn't walk well. Then she couldn't walk at all and both her legs were completely limp. I kept her alive by feeding and watering her by hand and giving her vitamin E and was just hoping she just had wry neck. Even though I fed her and watered her 3 times a day she kept losing more and more weight. I went out to check on her and she just gave up and died. I am heartbroken. I still had hope it was just wry neck until last night I went out into the coop to check on everyone and my 3-year-old hen Marshmallows head was twisted under her body. She is still alive and I made her a neck brace to keep her head up, she is drinking water with vit-al in it and eating food. She will be holding her head up fine and then after a minute she puts her head way back and shakes it like she is having a seizure. I am getting the mareks vaccine as soon as I can since it is Saturday the store that carries it isn't open and won't be open tomorrow. I have 13 other chickens that were in the same coop as both hens. 9 are bantams 4 are a bigger size. I also have 7 chicks that are currently hatching out of an incubator and I have worn clothes that I handled Blue Bell in to open the incubator so I am afraid they are already infected. I don't know what to do with marshmallow as she just started showing symptoms last night and the whole day before that she was completely fine, she has not lost any weight and she still wants to eat and drink and she prunes herself too. If she gets any worse to the point that she is suffering I am going to have a vet put her down. Is there any way she can get better? I know she will always carry the disease if she lives but since I caught it so soon is there any chance she will live? What should I do? Please help

I do not know much about Merek's disease but I do know there is no way to stop it once it starts, I have heard stories and seen videos of birds making a miracle recovery but it is rare. Some birds seem to be able to fight the disease and win.

It still sounds like wry neck. The treatment with vitamin E has to include selenium as well.
Here's a good rundown on the treatment (near the bottom of the page)

If it is Mareks, understand that there is no cure.

Your state poultry lab can do a necropsy and lab work to determine for sure what you're dealing with.

Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at Purdue University

406 South University St

West Lafayette, Indiana 47907-2065

Phone: 765-494-7440

Using the state lab, the humane euthanasia is part of the process and will save you money over going to a vet. If Lafayette is very far from you, call them and they'll likely send you a FedEx label for shipping.

I'm sorry. There's nothing you can do if your chickens have Marek's disease. The disease is contagious, so separate the infected chickens from the rest of the flock. To prevent chickens from getting Marek's chicks must be vaccinated before they are exposed to it. I'm getting my information from The Chicken Encyclopedia.
