Hello,

I became a member just recently because of an instance today. I was noticing my goose, later in the day, began spitting out a clear fluid. Within minutes I saw that everytime he looked down or open his beak, watery spit/fluid would rapidly pour out of his mouth. He has never had this until this evening. I am scared for him.

Any advice or ideas please!!!

lauren.

I don't know what this might indicate, but hope he'll be better soon. Could you please give more details? What type/age goose, any other symptoms, how he is otherwise behaving, is his eating/drinking/pooping affected?

Probably the best advice ever. Cottage Rose = genius.

ETA: She posted that to me the other day when I had a crisis.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with that advice. I think one of the purposes of this forum is to help us learn how to diagnose & treat our poultry ourselves. In years past when keeping backyard poultry was more commonplace there was also a lot of shared knowledge about caring for them. As a culture we've lost a lot of that knowledge. I think this forum is a way of rebuilding it.

I know the members in this group cover a wide spectrum of attitudes & abilities in caring for our birds. For many of us, obtaining professional veterinary care for our poultry is impractical, unaffordable, and/or unavailable. If it weren't, then there probably would be many less posts on this forum, especially in the Emergencies section. Instead, we'd be on the phone with our avian vets and/or in the car on the way to their offices.

Lauren, if there is a vet who can care for your goose that you can easily afford, take your bird there asap. Otherwise, keep searching & posting here, and hopefully someone else who knows about geese can help you. You can also look for members who have written knowledgably about geese on other threads and send them an email or personal message with your questions.

I hope your gander gets well soon!

Very true Carol. Not many of us can afford a vet, especially an Avian vet at that. And this IS what this forum is for after all. It would be nice if we could all afford a vet, but the way things are, its just not possible. I like the Michigan State Univesity phone line though. Thats good to have too!

Do they offer free professional advice? Or just referrals? Is it easy to get through & get your questiohs answered, or are you kept waiting for long at long-distance rates?

I would agree for chickens, but geese are.. Geese. They're really rare in this country, and a lot of people DON'T know about them. I've found that avian vets will give some consultation, especially poultry certified vets. They'll tell you what to do and what not to do.

Currently however, I'm working on a guide to taking care of your goose in emergency situations when you can't afford/can't find a vet. It's a very new idea for me, but I've done some serious research already. It'll be a compilation of advice from members, and advice from poultry vets that I can get in contact with.

I agree with you about geese. We have lots & lots of chickens, some ducks, a few guineas, and only 2 geese. But they take up a lot of room in our hearts.

Still, I would hope to find help for their ailments here on this forum. Geese may be rare in this country, but there are many members here who have them and may be acquainted with their common ailments. Let's welcome this new member and try to find the help she needs for her goose.

Lauren, how is your goose today? Have you found any help for his condition? Please post an update!

Did a bit of research, and I'm thinking there's something wrong with his crop. Can you feel it? If it's hard, then he might've gorged himself on something he shouldn't have, and was drinking excessively to try and digest it? Have you noticed him pooping at all?

I hope you find some help for your goose! And Welcome to BYC!
