I have a newish addition (July 2024) to the flock that appears to be having issues with his legs. We caught him yesterday to see why he had blood on his leg, and took these pics. Is this the first signs of scaly let mites? All of my hens seem to be dirt bathing and preening a TON in the last three days. Is this all related? I've added First Saturday Lime to their roosting bars, coop, run and dust bath areas. Saw a post here about treating the entire flock with rubbing alc

ohol (quickest treatment), but am hoping to get confirmation of the SLM issue, if possible. Please see pics.

I don't think that's SLM. I think he broke a pin feather. If they are preening like crazy at this time of the year, they are likely molting. He is.

Should the skin be that red? Also, he was actively bleeding the day before we were able to get him and take the pics. I wonder if he was pecking his own feet? And yes, they are molting. Should I do anything to help them get through that better?

The red streak may be a hormone flush. A broken pin feather will bleed a lot. He may have broken it mating or jumping off the roost.

I have a feather footed rooster and I do routinely spray his legs to saturation with Lice Freee! spray. You can get it at WalMart.

The molt takes as long as it takes. I supplement with meat during the molt. I offer tuna or sardines 3x a week during the molt. You can offer whatever scrap meat you have.

Okay, thank you for your reply. I will continue to keep watch on him. I have a few hens with bumble foot, so hoping that is not the issue. Appreciate you all being here! Cheers!
