i have done a flush on my hens crop and she has been forcing up quite a bit of food and grass. It was quite a horrid smell! but i let her rest and she has her head resting on the floor and is gasping! Her comb and wattle is a purple-ish, pinkish hue and i am afraid that she has aspirated. she is resting but does not look well. any other suggestions.

History - We offered ACV water, wet food w/ probiotic yogurt.

*Her decline has been over a 4 day period. Labored breathing and cyanotic before we did flush. We noticed this change when we got home this evening.

* I will offer ACV water later tonight. If I see improvement.

Is it sour crop or impacted crop? I am assuming sour crop since you say that she has a horrible smell. (my hen gasped for as well with sour crop). Is her crop hard or squishy like a water balloon? If it is squishy, massage her crop in a downward motion (not upward since it can cause it to come up and she can choke). You may hear bubbles popping and she may burp a horrendous smell. This is good since sour crop is a yeast infection in the crop that produces gas. You may notice a decrease in gasping after you do a massage. Also, it appears to be sour crop, massage her crop several times throughout the day to help get rid of the gas build up. If you have an irrigation syringe (or can get one) fill it with 2/3 ACV and 1/3 water (roughly...any high ACV proportion will be fine). See if you can give a little at a time until she takes the whole syringe full. It may take a while, but if you just squirt it down her mouth it may go into her lungs, so slow is better. The ACV will help kill the yeast infection. Also, only give her water with ACV in it, so that she is continually getting ACV into her system.

Hope your hen gets better soon!

ETA: Withhold food! If it is impacted or sour crop, both will be aggrevated by more food right now. Also, do the ACV syringe after she can breathe normally.

Our sweet Sparkles passed away tonight. I don't know what happened! It has been very heart wrenching for myself and children. My 12 yr old daughter is a real great vet tech. She has hopes of Cornell and plans on including avian veterinary medicine to her dvm.

**Thank you all for your help and expertise!

Especially MissPrissy, dlhunicorn, and GlendaHeywood. U all have very helpful and well educated info. Thanks so much from my whole family.

**Now lets just pray this was not something contagious!
