My rescue chicken Dumpling has been sort of off all week. About a half an hour ago, I found her laying on the ground with one wing spread out. I tried to help her stand up and she couldn’t seem to support her weight, like her legs were floppy and wouldn’t work. She barely reacted when I picked her up. She is inside in a kennel right now. She is laying down with eyes closed, breathing and moving her legs or head every few seconds. I dipped her beak in water to try to get her to drink and she wouldn’t. I looked and I can’t find any parasites or anything. There doesn’t seem to be much hope right now but is there anything I can do? Please it would break my heart to lose her.

I’m so sorry. Does she have any other symptoms? You said off, has she been laying eggs, pooping, eating and drinking?

She’s quite old so she’s not laying eggs. I noticed some poop that seemed more runny than usual yesterday. She’s seemed sort of...confused lately, like instead of going into the coop she was sleeping on the ground until I put her in and the other days he was standing outside in the rain. I thought it was because she was old and confused but now I don’t know. She’s been drinking obsessively lately....constantly.

What does her crop feel like? Is it full? Hard or soft? Can you smell a sour odor coming from her mouth?

The only other things I can think of are diabetes, kidney issues or thyroid which does happen. The excess water could make her have runny poop. What about her comb? Pale? I would say without taking her to a vet you might not be able to figure it out. Worms can possibly make them thirsty but if you’re not seeing any other symptoms then I would try some electrolytes or nutridrench and give to her with a dropper if necessary. Also see if she’ll eat, try a mashed egg yolk.

Ok, thank you. I’ll let you know how she does. We took her to the vet when we rescued her and the vet has no clue what he was doing so I guess that’s not an option

The vet may not have specilized in poultry. Id'd suggest looking up a vet that specilizes in poultry (if theres any close enough for you to drive to and can afford) I'd take her to one. You may also want to try hand feeding her if she doesn't atart eating on her own.
