ok, i had 3 chickens at first, then i bought 25 off of craigslist that were unvaccinated and started, they brought coryza, and now all 28 of my chickens have coryza. but 2 weeks before they got coryza, i had 2 hens go broody. for those 2 weeks, they layed on 12 eggs and they will be hatching this tuesday. please help, my mom said i can't just take the chicks away and put them in a brooder because the mother and her chicks get terrified. i don't know what to do, because the mother will have to raise the chicks, and the chicks could get coryza!!! does coryza spread to chicks? can chicks fight it? can you give chicks tylan 50? please help! this is so important because i was so excited about getting new chicks, yet now it's just stressful! i can't seperate the mothers and their chicks because the mothers already have it!

Remove the chicks.

Yes, it will be a tad stressful to the momma, but not to the chicks. Chicks suffer terribly with Coryza, believe me, I know. It spread through my whole coop. It was horrible!!

Do you have an incubator? If so, remove the eggs, and place golf balls under the hens. They will either not know the difference, or will reject the golf balls and get off the nest. When the chicks hatch, DO NOT let them get in contact with your adults.
When you feed your birds, feed the chicks FIRST. Then, feed the hens AFTER. It will help stop the spreading of germs.

I'm guessing you've read up on Coryza? If so, you know that it is extremely spreadable. Meaning, it can spread to wild birds, which in turn will spread to more domestic chickens.
I know this will probably sound horrid to you, but the best thing to do is cull your adult flock. I had to do this with my infected chicks, and yes, it was horribly sad, but it was the best thing to do. They suffer so much when they have coryza, and will prevent them from living a normal life.

Please keep us updated.

i've already cured most of my flock, but they will be carriers! is there ANYWAY THAT I CAN PUT THE EGGS UNDER A HEAT LAMP????!!!!!! can i just turn them at different times? and turn the lamp off every once in a while? taking the chicks away isn't an option at the moment. so is there ANYWAY, that chicks can fight it off? can they have very small doses of tylan 50? they should be able to fight it off! especially since vaccines for coryza have the disease! they should be able to fight it off and gain an immunity, right?

No, putting the eggs under a heat lamp won't work. They need humidity, and wont get it from the dry heat of the lamp.

I treat my birds with natural and holistic medicines, so I'm not really sure how to give, for lack of a better word, "conventional" medications.

Now, the eggs are due Tuesday right? Is there anyway you can advertise on craigslist for incubator service?

I agree with getting those eggs away from the hen and asking around for the use of an incubator. Does anyone know if Chickadee 101 should disinfect those eggs with a very mild bleach solution, say 1 tsp. per gallon of water? Those eggs have to be coated with coryza if they were in the coop with the sick chickens. The chicks will have to be vaccinated if you keep them, or the flock will have to be culled and everything disinfected.

She shouldn't. The eggs are very porous, and using bleach, or even water, could drown the chicks, and wash off the protective layer of film around the gg.

anyway, maybe i can get an incubator, just a small one though! it could even be used in the future!
