I rescued a duckling this summer from TS. I thought he was niacin deficient. Well I did everything for that and he didn’t get any better. I took him to a vet and she said she thinks it is a neurological issue. So we have been making different things to help him stand wheel chair water therapy etc. He seems happy hanging out with us and our dogs. We have noticed his joint in his leg is backwards so I do not thing he will ever walk. I was thinking about vet wrapping it straight but than he wouldn’t be able to lay down right. we bought a leg support but he hates it. Some say I should euthanize him. I do not want to do that. But I want to do what’s right for him. He is Pekin duck so I know he will get big. I am willing to devote the time for his care, I take in special needs animals on my little farm. Has anybody kept a duck in their house? I read it is cruel that they need to be with a flock. I cannot put him out there. The others would kill him being disabled. . Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. We even was wondering if we had his leg amputated maybe that would be better? He does use it when we bath him. He does kick it. Thank you in advance.

I wish I had something better to say. The one thing in your post I can address is whether or not keeping a single duck is cruel. In this case-no, it's not cruel as you will be the duck's flock if he is kept in the house where he will get lots of attention. I haven't had any ducks in the house--yet, but we do have a house bantam. Flock animals need companionship; it does not have to be of the same species.

If amputation would help the duck in any way, consider it. If it would not help the duck, then I see no reason to put the duck through the pain.

Have you talked with a vet about possibly breaking the bad leg and resetting it in the "right" position? At any rate, whether it be amputation or ... doing so while the bird is young is better than waiting. Good luck.
