I have been putting one layer of papers down on my Poop Board (a laminate countertop). Then I put an inch of shavings on top the papers. When I want to clean it, I just wad up the papers, shavings and poop, throw them in a bucket and take the whole thing out to my compost pile. I have horses too, so I have an 8 foot high compost pile in the fall that shrinks by spring down to 3 foot and is ready to use in my garden. Right now it's so hot in the middle it's smoking! YEA! I usually have some left over from Spring and Summer cleaning that I use in the fall. I make sure the compost is at least 6 months old before I use it.
I use the DL method for my coup, have had no smell, no ammonia. I put a new bag of shavings in once a week. (My coop is a refurbished for chickens 12 x 12 horse stall). My chickens free range on 4 acres all day and are in at night. I have 36 Buckeyes that are 8 weeks old now...
