Plot Twist Poultry flocks!

This is honestly for me to have a place to dump my chicken pictures and general posts about them. I've got to stop spamming my friends Seriously, I take my pictures of my chickens than I ever did of my son when he was a baby.

Starting off with young chick pics! These are our meat birds when we brought them home. First all the Cornish xs, then the others are Western Rustics.

I'll add more later but I have a book to finish writing!

Time for our hens! We ended up losing one of the lavender orpingtons, and another of the lavender orpingtons ended up being a cockerel that we're seeing if he stays well behaved.


A note since I've read many posts about the dangers of heat lamps: we aren't planning to use them again. The brooder plates we got, the chick didn't seem to like. So we had three points of security on the lamps, so that if one failed, there were two backups and if any of them failed it wouldn't change the position into dangerous territory. If all three happened to fail, I would assume that meant the "Big One" earthquake hit off the Oregon coast and at that point, unfortunately the chicks wouldn't be high priority.

9 Cornish crosses have turned into 33 pounds of chicken meat for the freezer!

We have another 11 to process, which are Western Rustics. I'll admit I'll have a harder time with some of these, because they aren't as food driven and asshole ish as the Cornish cross were. There is also a pair, a rooster and hen, that are clearly best friends and they're the most timid and gentle of the flock. I may end up convincing my husband to keep the roo, hen, and another two hens so the flock is a minimum size.

My Golden Girls. Supposedly Blanche and Dorothy are Olive Eggers and Rose is an Easter Egger. I'm just shrugging because even if they aren't what they were labeled as, they're still pretty and hens.

We're about to process 11 more, this time our Western Rustics red broilers. I thought I'd have a harder time with them because they're nice, but the cockerels are full teenage buttheads so nevermind

Speaking of Western Rustics red broilers, I FINALLY got a picture of them going full dinosaur I always think of that scene in Jurassic Park when they scuffle.

The cockerels also have really gorgeous feathers. Some of them look like they're lined in silver when the sunlight is at the right angle. And their tail feathers are this really pretty iridescent blue black. I think I'll be saving quite a few when we pluck them.
