Have you considered rehoming or separating your rooster from the flock ? How many hens do you have ?

but the rooster has a pretty face. there are 4 hens

Rooster/hen mating can sometimes appear very brutal - as is the case with many species of animals. Try horses, zebras, tigers, etc..
Chickens have no external genitalia so the rooster must stand on the hen's back, pull on her neck or comb till she raises her tail so he can mate up his cloaca with hers.

they lay eggs. i think they are a year old

As ChickenCanoe said, they’re mating. It’s not romantic or pretty. Is he drawing blood from the hens? If not, then I doubt he’s actually hurting them. They may protest and squawk and run away, but they’re fine. If you don’t want him to mate them, he needs to be separated from them, but that would not be a good quality of life for him. Chickens are not meant to be isolated.
