Hi,
Bought some new point of lay chickens today. One of the chickens I bought was limping. The women I bought her from thought that she might have injured her leg by falling off a perch or that the person she had bought her from might have hurt her by picking her up by the legs. I decided to take her anyway,

When I got home and had a look at her leg. I noticed she has a lump on her leg. She is eating and drinking ok.

Does anyone know what the lump might be? pls help

.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. No she does not lay down at all. She's full of life. it is almost impossible to catch her. She walks around ok and is eating and drinking.

Is there anything I can do to help her?

Will try and check her over tomorrow and she if there are any blister on her breast bone. If I can catch her that is.

The lady I bought her from said she thought she might have sprained her leg as well.

If you believe it is a sprain, if it doesn't upset her too much, I would place her in a crate in the coop, so that she doesn't lose her place in the pecking order. B complex vitamins in her water would be good, and I would re-evaluate her in a week, and put her back up if she is still limping.

Today she is eating well, but is lying down a wee bit today. Bought some Freeze spray for instant relief from twists, sprains and bruises from the chemist today. Would it be ok to try that on her leg??

She also has a dirty bottom as well. Skid marks. Her poop is yellow and yellow foamy.

The other point of lay chickens she is with are not bothering her. She is wanting out to be with my old chickens.

I'm not familiar with freeze spray. Drugs that contain "-caine" such as lidocaine, benzocaine, etc. are harmful to use on chickens. If it just contains menthol or eucalyptis oil it may be okay. She may have diarrhea from worms, vent gleet, or because of another infection (such as MS listed in previous post.) Tylosin, Denagard, Erythromycin, and Oxytetracycline are some of the drugs used to treat MS (mycoplasma synoviae,) but this is not something you would want in your flock if it turns out to be that. Also, you should be familiar with coccidiosis symptoms since moving your hens from a previous home to another can expose them to new strains of coccidia. With new hens, I would check them for mites and lice, and worm with a good worm medicine.
