I am thinking ahead to the chicks I will get next year, and I would like hens that will stand up for themselves & not get picked on, but also be friendly to humans. From what I have heard, the Barred Rocks might meet that description. It would be nice to have some other colors too, though. Do the different colors have different personalities or is it pretty much based on each individual chicken?

Thanks!

I can't speak for all the other varieties as I have only raised the Barred Plymouth Rocks, but I suspect, being the same breed, that the personalities would be very similar. Plymouth Rocks are a very rugged and hardy breed, and the Barred Rocks that I've had, have generally been calm birds that blended in well with my other breeds. Sometimes the hens were at the top of the pecking order, but more commonly in the middle of it, and a couple of times, I had an aggressive individual that I had to cull out of the flock. Hope this helps.
