a pale egg laid beside a pond,
two more, hidden in the fronds,
of tall thick ferns, for safety, peace,
She mourns her mate, bad dogs eat geese.
three eggs in all, then sat upon,
by a swift brown goose from dawn to dawn,
and night to night, and through the days,
that tired brown goose upon them lays.
Until they hatch, and wriggle out,
she warms and dries them, walks about,
shows them the pond, the bugs to eat,
all those feathers, and webby feet,
they eat and swim, until they're grown,
then they fly off, leave her alone.
