Back in Dec. I acquired a trio of Polish chickens. The hens were White Crested Blacks and the rooster looks like a mix between a Golden Lace and a White Crested Black.

Last week my Polish hen died. It was fine running around and I was showing her off to my family. The next morning I found her dead in the coop. This happened about 3 weeks earlier with the other hen. I have no idea why, they appeared to be healthy and moving about with no problem. They were eating normally and everything. The rooster is still with me and misses his mates.

I have no idea why this happened. My question is....... is this common with this breed? I'm wondering if I should get more of this breed. They are so pretty but they don't seem hardy. Unless, it is a fluke that this happened. The weather was very nice, in the 70's. We have not really had a winter this year so it leaves me to wonder why this happened. Yes, clean coop as well. No they did not free range but kept in a large pen.

I'm sorry this happened to you. It's not common, I have 3 girls that are 4+ years old, and 2 that are 3 years old.

How old were they when you got them? Where did you get them from?

I got them from a guy that needed to rehome them. They have been healthy. I'm not sure how old they are. They were laying well. Thankfully I saved some of the eggs and hatched a few this week. Cute little buggers.

I would like to get more but if they aren't hardy then I may have to rethink it. I love the roosters colors. Would you know what breed this rooster is? Like I mentioned before I believe he is a cross.

I've bred polish for years,
Polish do not just drop dead.
It's sounds more like CRD this is a respratory disease.

Maybe so but I didn't hear any wheezing from them. I held her the day before I found her dead and she wasn't wheezing. I'm glad my family got pictures of her. I guess I will never no.

So, Polish are pretty hardy then? I'm thinking of getting some. I have 2 roosters that need girlfriends.I also have a white crested black that free ranges. Lets just say I'm going to have some interesting chicks this spring. The boy gets around. He's in competition with a bantam Ameraucana..

Polish are one of my favorites. I plan on having more as soon as my new rooster does his thing. I have never had a health problem with them, knock on wood. They have a wonderful personality. I would get some girls for your roos.

That is my plan now that I know they are more hardy then I thought. I want to build a nice size pen for them so I can keep the breed.

Mine have always been pretty hardy, but I lost one 1 and a 1/2 Polish-1/2 Naked Neck to a dog about a month ago, so Im down to 1 hen and 1 rooster.
I also have 8 baby Polish that hatched out almost 2 weeks ago, along with 2 of the Polish/NN cross, those babies are 3/4 Polish and 1/4 NN.
Cute little bugers.
