When i looked around Mypetchicken.com I noticed it said the polish breeds (as well as other cute hatted breeds) are not hardy in winter. What does that mean? I would love to have one with my future flock, but I'd want it to be safe and warm during our long winters!

I'm not sure, I've never heard this before, but I just got my first Polish in May of this year to add to my flock of other breeds. I hope they are hardy in cold weather, but just in case I have a seperate building for cold weather months, guess they will just have to move til spring also.

Mine do fine here in Maine. I just make sure the waterer that I use has a small drinking area so their wattles don't get wet and get frost bite. Mine seem to hate the snow and only go out if I shovel them a winter patio spot. I will tell you they are seasonal layers for me. They stop in october and don't start again until late march.

I live in Washington where it's very wet and muddy during the winter. My polish's crests kept getting all wet and mucky last winter. It was gross and probably not very healthy for them.
