Hello everyone with Polish Chickens (or any crested chicken really).
If you have Polish breeds you know that their crest feathers often inhibit their eye-sight. People talk about trimming their feathers, or tying them back with a hair band, but those have never seemed like good solutions to me. Trimming can be dangerous with squirmy birds, not to mention detrimental if you plan on putting your birds in a show. Hair bands, of the kinds that I have tried, never really work well. They fall out, or fall down onto the chicken's neck. One time, one of my Golden Polish, Wembley, had an elastic hair band in here "hair" and it fell down, the front part into her mouth and the back part behind her head. The way she was panicking was terrifying. I don't want to do that again.
So what I am wondering, is why hasn't anyone created a unique head-dress for this Polish chicken problem (or have they?)? Something to keep their feathers out of their eyes so they can see better without damaging them for shows or creating a choking hazard.
I'm not saying I am up for the job because I don't have the time to create and prototype, but if someone out there with engineering skills created such a device I know I would buy one! Certainly I am not the only one who wishes something like this existed.
If something like this does not already exist (if it does, please point me to it!) is there anyone out there who thinks this is a good idea? This idea is free for the taking- heck it probably isn't original with me anyway.
What other ideas/suggestions would you give to solve this problem?
