One more question I forgot to add to my last post. I also have 5 golden laced polish chicks. They are 4 weeks old, well, a couple days will be 5 weeks old. I got straight run when I ordered them, since I couldn't get just pullets in this breed. At what age will I be able to tell which are roosters, and which are hens? Maybe I just have to wait until they start crowing...? I also got some salmon faverolles, that were straight run, and I can clearly tell which is the rooster with that breed already. They are the same age as the polish. Just wondering if the polish roos have any distinct features I can watch for??

Pullets generally have a more rounded head covering/crest; whereas, cockerels generally tend to be more spikey/rock star crested. Other than that the appearance of crowing/ saddle and hackle feathers are defining traits for cockerels.

Okay, showing my complete lack of knowledge about chickens... what are hackle feathers, and where would they show up? Right now all 5 of them have some spikey looking hair-dos going on. However, 2 and possibley 3 of them, are very shaggy looking spikes, kind of flopping every which way. While at least 2 are looking spiked, but more uniformed, and not hanging all about their head. So maybe I have at least two hens. I really wanted just pullets, but ordering just pullets in this breed wasn't an option. Thanks so much for your help!!

Don't quote me on this but I have 5 polish chicks and found out one is a roo, he tries to cock a doodle doo, so funny but also he has like two little horns starting on his head which I think is indicitive of a polish rooster.??
