Desperately hoping this bird is a hen :fl

Polish. 19 weeks old/4.5 months. Only just started showing wattles a couple weeks ago. No crowing. Fairly certain it’s a hen, but my rooster acts oddly towards this one - fluffing up and circling this one bird but neither of the other 2 I’m certain are hens. Could it just be this one is closer to sexual maturity? The other 2 hens are both bantams (1 silkie, 1 frizzle Cochin) and I know will take much longer to lay. I haven’t seen the rooster mount any of the birds yet, but he’s the same age - 4.5 months.

pics of Duchess below. I’ve had to trim the sides of her poof a little so she could actually see. Hen or roo?

I can't tell, but how did you manage to trim the poof safely? I have a polish that was a hatchery choice bird and poor thing obviously can't see but I'm scared she will jump and cause me to poke her eye if I trim.

I wrap her up like a burrito using a kitchen towel and pin in place. Then I use blunt tipped scissors to gently lift the feathers and snip while pointed away from her face, if that makes sense. It helps to hold her beak so she stays in place better. After the first time I think she knows what’s up now, and holds pretty still - she likes being able to see!

Aw bless her. I think at 4.5 months yours is probably a she. I'll see if I can grab her tonight. I have some safety scissors and maybe she will be more calm.
