I have a Polish Cockerel, born in 3/09. I got him from the feedstore when his leg got caught in the cage bottom and was severely injured. Vet and I both tried splinting, but it kept going back to a contracted position. I am dealing with the foot although know it will be an ongoing problem with pressure sores from inverting at the ankle. He gets around amazingly well, has unusually large wings and the other leg is fine.
ANYWAY...HE HAS ALWAYS HAD A FUNNY SMELL ABOUT HIM. Kind of a 'fishy' smell right around his head. He has bright eyes, good feathers, no parasites, pine bedding in his coop with 3 others, a run with grass and dirt, and some free-ranging time, too. He is being weaned off his chick starter and on a mix of starter/grower and layer crumbles right now, fresh water every day. He just has This Smell. Beak looks good, no discharge or sneezing or coughing. He gets overheated easily and will pant after running about, but he is a Frantic personality and always getting into something or anxious. He will allow himself to be held and relaxes in my arms and lays his head on my shoulder. Anyone else with Polish that have a funky smell around their head? He has had this since baby chick days. Something to do with the feathers coming from his skull maybe? I can't see any sores. He just always smells funny. Any clue of anything I should look for? I wouldn't think thrush since he has had this odor since a baby.
