pond liner question

Hi guys, just wondering if anybody uses underlay beneath their rubber pond liners. Looking to make a new pond and was going to go with a Firestone liner but wasn't sure if I needed an underlay or not. Also,has anybody had problems with gophers chewing thrue the flexible liners? There's a lot of gophers in my area and didn't know if I had to worry or not. Thanx a bunch!

No gophers around here i used cardboard as underlayment under the three koi ponds I built to protect the liners from rocks and roots worked great and is free
