Could it be possible to build a small shed or duck/goose barn on a man made island in the center of a pond? i know most land predators wont try to swim to get to the coop at night And most hawks can’t successfully kill fully grown waterfowl, right? How could one go about building a safe island shelter and being able to clean it?

Realistically, you can build about anything on a manmade island as long as the foundation is build solid enough.

So, my main concern with this build is that you are going for an island build to stop land animals from getting to it. Humans are land animals too. If you build a bridge, I feel you defeated your purpose with this moat. Would you realistically be willing to get in a boat or put on waders every time you need to get to your shelter?

Alternatively, if you are REALLY handy, maybe making a sort of drawbridge that you can deploy?

I was considering the wader or boat idea. A draw bridge would probably be too much of a mechanical hassle and would take up space for the birds to forage.

I personally wouldn't want to row, raft, or wade out to get the eggs every day -- especially in winter freezing conditions.

I would be concerned about cleaning. Realistically, the only way to do it would be to fork the bedding into your boat, get into the boat with it, fork it out of the boat into your garden cart, then wheel it to a suitable place away from the pond for composting. A LOT of work and probably unpleasant.

How big is the pond?
Pics would help here.

I'll never have ducks or geese on my tiny property, but I love to build things and love when other BYC members come up with solutions to interesting problems. Which is why I remember this:

Floating Duck House

Instead of having to wade out or get into a boat, you can pull the floating house to shore for maintenance!
