After I finally figured out how far off the wall to mount the roost and how wide to make the poop board here is my next question ....
In most of the pictures I saw on here the poop boards are set up to just be scraped off but there are some that have sand/shavings on them and the poop is shoveled with, I guess, a kitty litter scoop. What are the pros and cons ??? I am leaning towards the "shoveling" but still want the board to be removable but of course my DH says that this would be harder for him to build (we will have like a L-shape roost)

What are you knowledgeable "poop-boarders" doing, are you a scraper or scooper?

I do both. I have a long handled squeegie, and pull everything forward, and then use a very wide plastic scoop shovel to remove from the poop board. I use the squeegie to help push/pull the droppings into the shovel. I put into the wheelbarrow, and off to the compost heap I go! I have tried with and without pine shavings on the poop board. I like it better with a thin layer of shavings. Less poop actually sticks to the poop board, but it does add to the amount I am removing.

Scrape mine with a 1" x 2" board. Throw a little bit of shavings (off the coop floor) on them every couple days. Wash the boards every few months (takes 5 minutes).

I scrape mine, because I don't want it mixed with shavings. If you are interested in poop for the garden- it is nice to have a separate pile for composting. The chips take forever. It takes me less than a minute to scrape the morning poop and put it into my compost bucket. Garden Gold!!

SCRAPER....I got Hubby to pick me up a box of CHEEEAP laminent stick tiles from Lowes or Home Depot and I just set them on my roosting areas....every couple of days or so...depending on how lazy I'm being:oops: I just go out in the barn and remove the tiles and scrape the poo off. Most of it just slides right off...sometimes I scrape a little. EASY PEASY! And yes...it does just take a few minutes! The rest of the barn stays really clean.

i am sorry, but what are laminent stick tiles. are they square? or Long? that sounds like something i need.

ETA: are they just laying on the ground or do you have them raised?

I have a drywall-taping 'knife', it is like a paint scraper but maybe 10+" wide, that I use to "snowplow" the poo off the board into a bucket in my other hand.

I suspect that the "litter box" styles of droppings pans probably work best for either a) only just a couple-few birds, or b) only cleaning it out every week or so (rather than every day). Just guessing though, I have not tried that system nor am I likely to.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

I also have a putty knife that I use to scrape the poop into a bucket. I think it is about 4 or 5 inches wide. As for "L" shaped roosts we also have that so I am going to put a picture of what ours look like. Ours hang from a triangle piece of chain, and there is a hook on the roost where the chain attaches. So I can take down the boards and wash them if I need to. I don't know if I am explaining this well but hopefully you can see in the pic...
