My sweet old hen, who is predisposed to poopy butt, have really bad poopy butt today and when I went to clean her off I saw it was infested with worms!:sick Poor sweet thing! I washed her well, soaked in epsom salt, cleaned with vetricyn, and literally pulled hundreds of these nasty little white squiggly horrors out of the sore. She's also molting and has tons of pin feathers. Warning--Super gross picture below!! Any suggestions or advice for getting her healed and making sure the worms don't come back??? Im preparing a secluded spot in bathroom for her to stay until she's better.

Oh no, sorry about your hen. Those are maggots and she is suffering from flystrike. It can be deadly if the maggots become internal. I would try to repeat your bath again today and maybe tomorrow, since the maggot larvae can continue to hatch for a bit. If you can get SWAT a horse ointment or gel from your feed store that contains pyrethrins, or some permethrin spray to apply directly to her wound to kill any maggots left behind, that would be good. I hope that she survives. Here is some reading about flystrike treatment:

Thank you. Yup. That's what she got. Appreciate the link. Chicken chick has lots of good articles. My partner just went to buy the permetherin spray. My hen Punkin is going to make it dog gonnit! She's the oldest of my flock, and I'm not gonna let my stupid negligence take her down😔.

It can happen to anyone’s chickens. In hot westher when flies are around, if they get any poop stuck to them, or have a wound, flies can go right for it. Even broody hens sitting on eggs are at risk. Please let us know how she does.
Oh goodness, thank you. Appreciate the kind words. I will post how she is doing tomorrow. She's all cleaned up and I spent about an hour removing the maggots. I will bathe her again this evening and treat with permetherin. She's def not feeling well. I know it must have been very painful for her during the cleaning up. Fortunately I had a bit of pain medicine left over from my vet when one of my chickens had surgery a few months ago.:yesss: She's just resting now...

Just wanted to give an update. Pumpkin is doing so much better. The sore has started healing really nicely. I've been keeping it clean for 3 days. I let her go back out with the flock today because she just seems so sad and missing her friends ( not wanting to eat and drink). as soon as she was back out with her friends she started showing interest in food and water again which was awesome. I'll continue to keep an eye on her wound everyday making sure nothing worsens, etc., but I think she's out of the woods! Hooray!:D I did bring a poop sample into my vet today to see why she's been having diarrhea which is the original cause of this whole mess....
