Noticed a couple days ago that one of my hens seems to have poop near its butt. I was hoping it would clear up on its own as my girls are not great about being held so I’m a little unsure how to go about cleaning her myself… but it has not cleared up and today when I went to check on them I noticed she is keeping her tail feathers down instead of perked up. What would be the cause of this and what can I do to help?? And if I do need to handle her any tricks on how to keep her calm?

You need to wash her bottom. Leaving dirty poop on her will have flies lay eggs in her vent. Flies attached to poops.

Put a towel around her wings so that she stays calm and still for you.
You can wash her in a laundry sink or in a bathtub.
Wear glove and wash her gently.
If there is any poop that stuck dried on the feather which does not wash off, use a scissor to cut off that bit of feather. Be careful not to cut off too close to her skin.

What cause of this? I am not sure so here are a few Educators that might be online to assist you.

Photos?

Gather up your hen and give her a clean up.

Keeping the tail down, see if she's constipated, prolapsed(?), does she need to lay an egg(?), is she pooping?

Swaddle in a towel and examine her. If she's having a hard time expelling an egg, give her Extra Calcium.

Calcium Citrate+D3, 1 tablet daily for 5 day if you suspect she's having issues with an egg.
