I keep reading that poopy butts are a sign of mites, but mine have poopy butts, and no mites. How in the world is this a sign of mites? Can someone explain how this can be a symptom of mites??

Crusty Buns are not a cut & dried sign of a parsite problem, many breeds have lot's poofy feathers in the vent area and so they can get a little funky. WTS Mites and lice do like warm moist areas to lay their egg's, and if they ( mites/lice ) have layed alot of egg's any bird will show a Poo build up, because the feather shaft's are so caked with mite eggs. Some folks who don't pay much attention to the cleanliness of their birds just naturally assume they have them and in most cases they do only because of the cleanliness issue.

Thanks, three of my girls have a massive build up and it is finally warm enough to catch them and trim up their butts today. After homeschooling, my dd and I are going to tackle this project. I do not see mites, but we will take another look-see while we have them captive.
