My chicks are always stepping in poo in their shavings and they lug around a big hash of shavings and poop on their feet. So i grab them and rinse their feet under a faucet. Is this a common occurrence or should I be doing something differently?

It happens, I just leave mine be it seems to dry and fall off on its own. Sometimes they will get little balls stuck to the end of their toes and I have to very carfully pick/peel/soak those off. Hope this helps.

Agreed; I do the same...

Maybe I am a bit nuts...but I like to "pick up" a bit in the cage every time I go down to see them to keep them and the cage cleaner and smelling a bit nicer. If their feet are dirty when I am having chicken time, getting them used to being handled, I will rinse their feet but I also keep a box of tissues down there to just wipe them off it's not that bad.
