I had to cull my 4 wk old roo that I posted about a few days ago...It was to the point that hi foot was completely backwards when he would walk. I felt so bad for him. So now I am down to 25 chicks in all.

He was the first loss Id had since starting all this. But I guess that it comes with the job. and the chick addiction!

Sorry for your loss, it is never easy losing one!

At least he is not suffering anymore.

Sorry for your loss. It is never easy to loose a bird. It's amazing on how we bond to them. I have lost one to a predator and two to illness, and likely one to a heat attack and re-homed one.

I had post on here a couple of wks ago about one of my chicks, you can check my post if you'd like. It had slipped a tendon and it's leg was all screwed up! We worked on that think for a couple of days trying to set it, finally when think it may have set puss came out of the scab on the hock...it was so sad. The chick never seemed like it was in pain though. We even did the pipe cleaner around the legs for 3 days and that did not work with antibiotics on the wound.

Ended up my husband got attached to it after all the nursing, he could not commit to CULL so yesterday I took it to the vet and had the leg amputated. It was already hopping around on one leg anyway, eating and drinking mingling with the other chicks, so I thought it couldn't hurt. Needless to say today The infamous JERSEY GIANT is hopping around on one leg happy and doing as if she still had her other leg. It was just a bad attachment.

I'm sorry to hear about your story but I thought maybe mine would give you a little smile.

So sorry for your loss. I too lost a new baby. It was my first successful hatch, just last week. This baby never seemed to have a chance, after hatch he acted like he was stuck in the lower portion of the shell. After watching him struggle for about 36 hours and not really wanting to intervene, I did help him out of the shell. That's where the situation became very clear. His feathers never seemed to dry, but stuck together and he felt like a dirty paint brush. The shell was not really stuck as I picked him up out of the bator and the shell slid right off, but he was really spraddle legged and seemed to have no strenght at all to push the shell off. I tried the suggestions on BYC to treat the legs using the tape method with a bandaid. He was beautiful, I helped him eat and drink frequently for the next two days, but early in the morning on the third day I found him on his way out. He did not seem to be in pain, so I just gave him all of the love that I could before he quietly slipped away. I know how you must feel and I am again so sorry for your loss.
