Hi, i have hatched some runner ducks and all were fine except one that has hached and could not open his eyes they looked all weepy so I have been wiping them with cool boiled water and applying gold eye drops, we have seperated him as he could not find the food before the others and was off on his own, he is much much smaller than the others but since we have seperated him he is looking much better although he is still very small, his eyes are now open and clean but his eyes protrude and are grey in colour, could anyone tell me if he is going to be ok and whether you think he can see, we are hand raising him so we are making sure he eats and drinks and have given some boiled egg mashed up as i read that it could help a sick duck. He is about 2 weeks old, the problem is in both eyes. he is quite chatty and lively apart from all this, thank you in advance for any advice.

I have attached some photos

Is it possible he was born blind? If he sees movement do his eyes follow it?

No he does'nt follow movement, if he is blind do you know if he will manage when he is older , finding food and water?

Thanks

Just like for a blind dog or cat everything will always have to stay the same, food, water, pool will have to be kept where it always is so he can find it. and he will have to be kept in a secure setting, where he wouldn't fall prey to Preds. People do it with other animals so it maybe worth a try. If your so inclined.

about the pool it would have to be shallow so if it took a while to get out he wouldn't tire and possibly drown. again everything the same a way in and a way out.

Please keep us posted on how he is doing, and he would be alot happier if he had another duckling with him too. they thrive on company of the duckie kind.
