Just got 3 hens excited and nervous in the respect that I want them to be happy chick's.

This site is fantastic all the tips and advise s amazing.
I had them on grass to begin with in the garden but my how they can poo haha. So I've put bark chipping and wood chip mixed together on the grass. Is this correct?
Also they are pooing loads in the straw nest boxes and hardly any poo in the coop,
Not layng yet they are just 20 weeks tomorrow.
Also are there any hangers for the water and feed or do you make one yourself.
Any advice will be really appreciated.

Hi!

Let me share a few things that I know chickens love! They like a pile of sand to dust bathe in. (My whole chicken run is sand, which is great because there's no mud when it rains.)

Chickens also love to sun bathe. If it's to too hot out, they will spread out in the sunshine. If you can give them access to a free range area, that's great, and if not, they do love apples, melon, kale, watermelon. Chickens are all about food! They like cracked corn too. They also like cabbage. You can hang a whole cabbage or cut one in half. Chickens love to peck peck peck and scratch. They also like raw corn on the cob.

In other words, the way to a chicken's heart is through it's stomach. hehe

Oh that's great so dyou reckon I just get rid of the Bark and wood shaves and put sand down? And is it just your normal sand.
I've been giving them a big scoop of food that lasts all day is this right or should I feed them morn and evening? xx

Hello again!

If you want to, I would definitely recommend the sand instead of the bark and wood shavings. And it can be raked easily to remove all the poo and feathers. :) It's really up to you. I've tried everything, and sand is the best bet.

I get mine from one of those places that sells sand and gravel. A big scoop from a front end loader only costs around $15, and it is ALOT!

As far as the food goes, I just keep my feeder filled all the time. That way they never run out. It's a hanging chicken feeder, and I keep in inside the hen house, so it stays dry. If you hang the feeder, they can't get into it, and scratch out all the food, causing alot of waste.

:)

You might want to stop by our learning center for lots of great articles on raising your new flock...

Chickens need feed all day long. So put out enough to last all day long. You don't want them going hungry. I would get ready with some layer feed as they will probably be laying soon. Do not let them sleep in the nest boxes, so you need to block those off until they are laying. Put some fake eggs in the boxes so they know that is where you lay your eggs and not sleep. But if they are sleeping there now, you need to train them to roost on the bars. So when you go to lock them in at night, get them up on the bars. Keep doing this for several nights until they get the hang of it.

Sand makes an excellent bedding for runs and coops. I use it everywhere. Easy to clean, stays dry, keeps flies away, no poop smells, absorbs poop moisture and soft on the feet.

Good luck with your poultry adventures and welcome to our flock!

That's great advice thankyou so much I'll get cracking on that tomorrow
If I use the sand should I just put it on top of the soil throughout the length of the run ?
Last question sorry
