Some great breeds to look into include the buff orpington, black australorp, faverolle, jersey giant, leghorn and cochin. All these breeds are good layers and can be eaten.

Hello, we just got chickens and live in Portland TN too. Did you get some yet? My hubs got a wild hair and brought home a bunch of reclaimed lumber and built our coop in June. We are loving it. We only have three chickens right now though.
