I'm new to having chickens kind of...I had them years ago but that was like 20 years ago. Anyways I have a chicken that is acting a little lethargic and shaking her head/scratching at it sometimes...not all of the time..not violently. She still loves worms/grass/veggies/treats etc It doesn't appear that its life-threatening to me...she still runs and flies as hard as she can when I walk out with the treat pan...she's still very sweet and everything. She's about 9 months old. Someone told me that it may be a head cold? She's a leghorn mix if that matters..and we live in NC so the weather has had its warm and cool days..lots of rain..anything i can do to help treat her? I don't have a chicken doctor around here? Anything i may be able to buy at the store/amazon to help? Thanks for any help

I'd rather not give antibiotics unless absolutely necessary because i was told before that they could have a reaction and die from it.

Welcome to BYC. Do you see any nasal drainage or watery eyes? Listen for any sneezing. Can you look her over and see any lice or mites on her skin, or the eggs or droppings from them? Look into her ears as well for any sign of mites. A QTip might be helpful. Check her crop to see if it emptying overnight. If it is full and puffy first thing in the morning, there might be a problem.

No nasal drainage or watery eyes..I haven't heard any sneezing..I spend about an hour a day out with them..I'll look for lice/mites but i haven't seen any..any suggestions on how to control mites/lice if my chickens get it?

I've felt the crop at about lunchtime and nothing seemed hard?

Side note:She's had this problem for maybe a week? She doesn't seem to be getting worse..she actually acts some days like she's getting back to normal. Some days you can't even tell anything is wrong with her.

Also I was thinking about putting some pine shavings in the chicken house for them...I think I've seen that they arent toxic but cedar is..is that true? Something about respiratory issues.
