Hi! So two nights ago my two month old golden laced Wyandotte (Claudia) was the first one back to the coop and I didn’t think much about it. Yesterday morning I let the girls out to the run and Claudia didn’t follow. I don’t pick her up often but I got closer to her and she got up and it looked like she was drunk the way she was walking and then her neck was very wobbly looking as well. Yesterday evening I gave her some oral vitamins and I gave her a shot of antibiotics. She seemed better in the evening and drank some water last night but didn’t eat. She slept inside last night. Today I took her to work with me and she sat in my truck in a little cardboard box all day so I could keep an eye on her and offer her water and food. She ended up eating quite a bit throughout the day. She was still a little droopy. I should mention her poop looks normal. This evening I went to give her another antibiotic shot and I think I punctured her lung! she started coughing up blood and was breathing hard. Can she survive this??? Since this happened she’s drank a bit of water and is not breathing hard anymore. Any help for either issue is greatly appreciated!

The lungs are up in the back, but needles should only be injected into the breast muscle 1/4 inch deep, or just under the skin in the back of the neck. For chicks that small I would not give injections. What antibiotic are you using, and where did you inject it?

At her age I would wonder about her having coccidiosis, and think about starting Corid in her water. Dosage is 2 tsp per gallon of Corid liquid, for 5-7 days, and it is safe to also treat the other chickens. Until you give that, I would give more vitamins with electrolytes. What do her poops look like.

It was injected under her wing toward the breast, but I think it may have gone in too far? Which antibiotic do you suggest? I can go out to get different ones tomorrow, I’m really hoping she makes it through the night

Her poops look normal today. There may have been a little diarrhea yesterday. Her most obvious signs are her neck and wobbly legs. Other than that she was very alert today, clear eyes, etc. I have 9 other chicks, 3 of which got introduced on Memorial Day as 16 week old pullets.
