possible sex link?

well, pictures are out, broke my camera. but you guys know what i'm talking about apparently, so i figure i'm safe there.

so what from what i can tell so far is that:

i have to have a white hen with a silver gene and a red roo to make a red sex link

and

i have to have a barred hen with a red roo to get a black sex link

NOW my next question is, what if the hens and roos are not of pure breed, would it still work? or would you end up with a painters pallet of chicks....

how do i know if something is dominant or recessive lol!

i have a flock of baby EE's right now so my guess is if i incubated those eggs next spring i would get a rainbow of chicks...

but i think i have two sexlink hens, and some white roos, and i'm guessing that they would produce the yellow chicks and maybe some golden ones? but none of my eggs would be sex linked right?

lol, there is much to learn in this department, much much much to learn

They would have to be pure.
EE's don't work, and sex-link to sex-link wont work either..

I know some of the people who produce eggs for the hatchery.

They use white rock X rir to get golden comets
white leghorn X RIR to Get red star
barred rock X RIR to get black sex link.

These three I know...now other may use others and call them one of these names. The golden comet from this cross are buff with white under feather not dark feathers....Didn't read in a book, these are facts from flocks used to produce eggs for a hatchery. These are production bird not true show birds........

White Leghorn?
The White Leghorn doesn't carry the Silvering Gene need to produce a Sex-link....

White Leghorn are dominant white--
The dominate white (I) gene in manly found in the white leghorn. It is not completely dominant, being less efficient at suppressing gold/red pigment than black pigment.
In order to use White Leghorns in a Sex-link breeding it would have to be the sex-linked gene silver (S)..

Chris

Well guess this strain carry the silver gene(they are production whites)

If you are breeding to produce a sex-link you whant the other "White" gene (S) Sex-linked Silver..
OK, If you are starting from scratch you can get and of the breeds below,
For the Hens

Light Breeds -
- Light Sussex
- Light Brahma

Columbian -
- Columbian Leghorn
- Columbian Rock
- Columbian Wyandotte

Silver
- Silver Leghorn
- Silver Laced Wyandotte
- Silver Penciled Wyandotte
- Silver Penciled Rock

For the Rooster

Rhode Island Red
Red Leghorn
Buff Brahma

This is just a few breeds that can be used to create a Sex-link..
Now myself I like keeping within a breed or at least comb type...
Red Leghorn rooster to a Columbian Leghorn or Silver Leghorn hen,
Buff Brahma rooster to a Light Brahma hen,
Single Comb Rhode Island Red to a Silver Penciled Rock or Columbian Rock hen,
Rose Comb Rhode Island Red rooster to a Silver Laced Wyandotte, Silver Penciled Wyandotte or Columbian Wyandotte
