Hi guys
It’s got cold here the last few nights and a lot of ice in my yard. I noticed my one duck has some weird dark red spots on her foot. I immediately brought them in and set up an area in the house
I have been trying to read and look at as many pics as possible but can’t find anything that shows the very start of frostbite
There are no cuts on her foot
I have attached a picture of her foot.
after loosing her sister a week ago ( not to frost bite possibly tetanus waiting on autopsy results as vet couldn’t figure it out other then that ) im extra scared now of anything happening to these two
if this is frostbite at the start what can I do to make sure it doesn’t get worse ? I’m going to be keeping them inside for the winter now

Would be good to have a pic that was better lit and in focus.
Where do your ducks spend the night?

It’s got cold here the last few nights
How cold...in F or C degrees?

Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!

I have a duck house I built. It’s insulated and has venting on both sides at the top but I have been letting them have water at night and noticed the humidity was high this morning on the window of it.
It got to windchill of -13 C this morning. I have been watching the weather as it’s going to be +17 this week so I haven’t emptied the pond yet as I was hoping they would get another week in it. I have a heater in it so the water stays at 71 F and she went in it this morning both Of them did only her one foot is showing this they are in my basement so the lighting isn’t the best to get a picture and of course trying to keep her still lol but I will try with flash on this time
I live in southern Alberta
I’m thinking I will just keep them inside now till I get the pond cleaned out so there is no water or ice for them to be on I can block off the pen area and let them wonder in the bigger yard a few times a day and keep water out of the duck house at night. I never feed them in there so they should be okay without water for the night ?

Thank you. I have updated this information now
Very much appreciate the help

To me, the foot looks bruised. Frostbite is black.
With that said, you don't want to keep bringing them inside and back outside they won't be able to acclimate if they need to be outside.
What's your set up like? Most ducks do well outside in extreme weather as long as they have shelter to get out of the wind. I provide a house for the night time, but it's not insulated. You can make it too warm and if there is not enough ventilation they will get frostbite from the moisture produced. I also provide thick layers of straw for them to walk on in the run as well as bed down in in their coop.

We get to minus 30-40 in the winter here so I did insulate the duck house as that’s way to cold for them. I do have venting that runs down each side at the very top kind of like a long triangle starts wider and goes smaller
I also have a window in the front with a screen I can open if more work needs to come in. I noticed on the door I open For them to come out there was ice as I have been giving them water in the night house. I plan to stop this as each morning the straw is very wet all but the back two corners. Today the egg was even frozen and it was in the dry corner. I’m thinking the water caused an issue in there last night as it got to -13
The pen is under the covered deck so out of the wind and weather the pen is a few feet away I let them out around 8-8:30 in the winter and put them away 6:30 at night. I go with the sun so in summer they were out at 5:30-6:00 am till 9:30 pm.
I know frostbite of bad enough gets black but wondering if it was caught very early if this could be what it was. Her foot was very cold in that area when I picked her up. It’s since back to normal temp and no changes to it since I brought her in.
it’s going to get warm again this week of plus 17c so I could let them back out at that time and have pond drained so no chance of them getting wet also keeping water out of the duck house at night

I am wondering if it just got too wet and there weren't enough dry areas. It could be her foot was extremely cold.
It can get extremely cold here, but it's not extended - just brief spells of bitter cold. I have only put water in the coop and duck house during the day when the weather got down to -70F for a few days. When I had to put it in the coop, I blocked it off with a plank of wood so that they could only stick their head in. However, most of our winter days are not that bitter. I don't house my ducks with food or water at night.
I know there are members here from Canada as well as Alaska (similar weather) with ducks and chickens. Hopefully, they will see this post. I can only think of one name at the moment. :old
