Hi everyone!
I received my last batch of day-old chicks this past Tuesday. Today I was inspecting them for pasty butt and I noticed one of them had something flat and round stuck to its abdomen. To me, it looked like a tick (brown, flat and round like that, but bigger). I pulled it off and looked at it... it wasn't a tick. There were no legs or head. It was just a piece of dried goo.
I looked back at the spot where I pulled it off the chick and there is like a... hole... there. If a chick had a bellybutton it would be that exact spot if you can imagine, but it's a very sore looking place and I was afraid to mess around with it too much.
It really looks as though this flat round dried piece of goo was some sort of ooze that came out of that sore place.
The chick is acting fine... it's not walking funny, it's bright-eyed and alert, and seems to be eating and drinking. I'm hoping that whatever this is will resolve on its own, but what is it? Is it leftover yolk that is oozing out of an umbillical hernia? I've never heard of such a thing but it's the only thing I can think of. I'm also wondering if I should put something on it like Neosporin or something like that?
Has anyone else had something like this happen?
